An ornate pair of antique Rococo Revival candlesticks, likely French and dating to the late 19th century.
Each is richly modeled with sweeping Louis XV-style scrollwork, foliage and floral ornament, with unusually detailed naturalistic insect decoration throughout the bases. Butterflies, bee-like insects and other small creatures emerge among the flowers and scrolling foliage, giving the pair considerably more character than traditional Rococo candlesticks.
The elongated baluster-form stems rise to dramatic foliate drip pans and molded candle cups, all finished in a warm aged gold surface with areas of naturally developed patina.
Substantial in both scale and weight, the pair makes a beautiful decorative statement on a mantel, dining table, console or library shelf.
Appears to be gilt bronze or a similar cast gilt metal; no maker’s mark has been located.
Measurements:
11.5” H × approximately 6” W at the widest point
Candle opening approximately 1”
Sold as a pair.
Antique condition with surface wear, oxidation, patina and finish variation consistent with age.
