A striking pair of large carved wood portrait busts believed to depict the young Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Each figure is rendered in elaborate 18th-century court dress, with particularly fine attention given to the coiffures, clothing and facial features. Marie Antoinette is depicted with an arrangement of carved roses in her hair, while Louis XVI wears his hair tied at the back in the fashion of the period.
The busts rest on turned socles above tall, faceted wood plinths, giving the pair an unusually architectural presence. Their warm aged finish and visible evidence of hand carving lend considerable character.
Likely Continental European and dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, these appear to be decorative interpretations of the French royal couple rather than copies of a specific documented portrait model.

Condition: Good antique condition with age-appropriate surface wear, variation in the wood and scattered drying/shrinkage cracks, particularly through the bases and socles, as photographed.
