Pair of vintage silvered spelter equestrian sculptures inspired by Guillaume Coustou’s celebrated Chevaux de Marly, or Marly Horses.
Each dramatic composition depicts a powerful rearing horse restrained by a partially draped attendant, capturing the dynamic movement and theatrical energy associated with the famous 18th-century French sculptural group.
The figures are cast in spelter or a similar white-metal alloy and finished in a richly aged silver-pewter tone. Both rest on textured rocky plinths mounted to dark wood bases. Fine modeled details include flowing manes, muscular horse forms, expressive faces, drapery, vegetation and twisted metal reins.
The pair has developed a beautifully varied surface over time, with areas of darker oxidation, rubbed silvering and exposed underlying tones contributing to their collected vintage appearance.
A striking decorative pair for a library, study, mantel, console or equestrian-inspired interior, especially suited to traditional, French, English country and Ralph Lauren–influenced spaces.
These are later decorative interpretations after Guillaume Coustou’s famous Marly Horses and are not period 18th-century sculptures.
Condition: Good vintage condition with notable age-related finish wear throughout. The silvered surface shows rubbing, oxidation, discoloration, darkened areas, surface spotting and areas of finish loss, especially across the horse bodies, faces and raised details. The twisted metal reins remain present but show age and slight irregularity. Wood bases display light scratches and wear. No major structural breaks are visible in the supplied photographs. Please review all photographs closely for condition.
