A wonderfully decorative vintage French Breton-style faience table lamp, hand painted with traditional regional imagery and mounted on an ornate pierced brass-tone base.
The elongated ceramic body features a pastoral scene with figures in traditional Breton dress against a coastal landscape, surrounded by delicate hand-painted floral sprays. The reverse is centered by the distinctive ermine coat of arms of Brittany beneath a coronet and flanked by heraldic animals, with a banner reading “BRETAGNE.”
Deep blue scrolling borders accented in yellow and orange frame the upper and lower portions of the ceramic body, giving the lamp the colorful folk character associated with traditional Breton faience.
The ceramic is mounted on a substantial brass-tone base with an open pierced gallery. The lamp retains its brown electrical cord, harp and vintage cream fabric shade with scalloped lower edge and decorative trim. It presents beautifully when illuminated.
Measurements: approximately 25.5” high overall with shade; base measures approximately 5” in diameter.
Condition: Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. The hand-painted ceramic exhibits scattered surface marks, minor paint and glaze wear, and small areas of loss around the lower edge where it meets the metal mounting. The brass-tone base and hardware show tarnish, spotting and patination consistent with age. The vintage fabric shade shows discoloration, scattered staining, surface wear and wear to the decorative trim. The brown cord and plug also show age-related wear. Lamp is shown illuminated and functioning at the time of listing. As with all vintage lighting, professional inspection is recommended prior to prolonged use.
