Vintage framed needlepoint interpretation of The Wool Winder, after the celebrated circa 1759 painting by French artist Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725–1805).
The beautifully detailed composition depicts a young woman winding wool in an elegant domestic interior while a small cat rests beside her. Worked in a warm, sophisticated palette of cream, burgundy, pale blue, gold, green and brown, the needlepoint is surrounded by an ornate burgundy floral border.
The piece is professionally presented behind glass in a gilt wood frame with a wide cream fabric mat and gold-tone inner trim. The traditional subject, handworked texture and softly aged palette make it particularly well suited to English country, French country, grandmillennial and collected traditional interiors.
Greuze’s original oil painting, The Wool Winder, dates to approximately 1759 and is held by The Frick Collection in New York. This piece is a later handworked needlepoint interpretation of that historic composition and is not an original work by Greuze.
Condition: Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. Slight fading, light to moderate discoloration and light wear to the frame. The gilt frame shows scattered small marks and finish wear. The reverse paper backing has substantial age-related discoloration, tears and separation along portions of the edges, as photographed. Minor irregularities/open areas in the needlework are visible upon close inspection. Hanging wire remains attached. The work has not been examined outside of the frame. Please review photographs closely as they form part of the condition description.
